Juniper Preps for a Quantum-Computing World – Post Quantum Cryptography

Telecom vendors have recognized the existential importance of securing telecom networks before Y2Q (years to quantum). This is whencurrent encryption schemes used in networks will become obsolete by advanced quantum computers. Experts agree that this will happen by 2030, but some project Y2Q to be within 18 months.

Juniper has introducednewly standardized encryption schemes to protect data transmitted by optical and packet devicesas part of what they call Post Quantum Cryptosystems (PQC). Juniper refers to “quantum resistant technology” rather than quantum safe, as it is hard to guarantee safety. Its solutions includeencryption of end-user data, network control plane data (e.g. routing updates), and management data (from logging into the administrative port of networking equipment). Juniper is currently focusing on the well-established NIST standards (FIPS 203 and 204).

Recognizing that implementing quantum resistant networking is not a one and done, nor is it a forklift. Juniper’s solutions are gradual, starting with software solutions that work with existing hardware. Its initial focus is the main operating systems Junos and EVO, and they are pursuing a hybrid approach.

Juniper recognizes that the quantum journey is not without complexities and cites challenges such as performance (need for massive compute), deployment, standardization, hardware availability, and more. To this end, the company is working with its customers and with the industry and standards bodies to address those challenges and is at the forefront of this important initiative for the telecom industry and the verticals it serves.

Juniper is among select communications vendors developing solutions for Post Quantum Communications, which is increasingly essential for telecom operators to secure their networks and to create an opportunity for them to offer PQC solutions to their enterprise customers. PQC has become a key issue in the C-suite and boardrooms in many major industry verticals1
